History
The Ontario Society of Artists founded it in 1876, the
OCAD was originally known as the Ontario School of Art. In 1912 after
lots of name changes, the school finally adopted the name Ontario College
of Art. The school kept this name for 84 years and then finally changed
it to what it is now in 1996. The change was made to recognize both aspects,
Art and Design. It has been home to a lot of many famous artists and
designers including Arthur Lismer, ans to confer
the degrees of Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Design in 2002 from

In 2004 work was completed on a new expansion. The “Sharp Centre
for Design”. Designed by architect Will Alsop. It has been called
the “floating shoebox” or “tabletop”. It is a
box four stories off the ground supported by a series of multi-colored
pillars at different angles the kind of look like crayons.
